The Iraqi Institution for Development (IID) implemented the “Bidaya” Project, a vocational and life skills training program targeting youth released from juvenile detention in Mosul, funded by iN2 Company, from 1 January 2023 to 31 March 2025, reaching a total of 180 beneficiaries.
The project aimed to empower youth and support their integration into the labor market by developing their vocational and life skills, rebuilding their self-confidence, and strengthening their connection with society. This contributes to social stability and reduces the risk of relapse into negative behaviors or violent extremism.
The program delivered integrated training in electrical installations and air conditioning installation and maintenance, alongside training in life skills, financial and administrative skills, and the use of artificial intelligence as supportive tools for developing businesses and future livelihoods.
Each training cycle lasted 32 days, with 5 hours per day, following a competency-based approach with a strong focus on practical application to ensure participants gain market-relevant skills.
The project also provided psychosocial support throughout the training period, aiming to rebuild participants’ confidence and enhance their ability to reintegrate into society, particularly given the sensitive transitional stage of the target group.
At the end of each training cycle, a job exhibition event was organized, bringing together private sector companies, local and international organizations, and local government representatives. This allowed participants to showcase their skills and connect with employment opportunities or potential employers.
The project achieved tangible results, with participants demonstrating approximately 85% improvement in practical skills. Many participants secured employment opportunities, others started their own small businesses, while some applied their skills within their communities, enhancing their sense of productivity and belonging.
The “Bidaya” Project represents a successful model of integrated interventions combining vocational training, psychosocial support, and capacity building. It has contributed to increasing employment opportunities, improving social stability, and supporting the positive reintegration of youth into society.
