Kamal Al-Mashriqi

Expert in Human Rights and Education

Mr. Kamal Al-Mashriqi is a regional human rights expert and lawyer specializing in public freedoms, with more than twenty-five years of experience in training, advocacy, and capacity building at national, regional, and international levels. He has actively contributed to the development of national policies and action plans related to human rights and the legal protection of vulnerable groups.

In addition to his legal and human rights work, he has strong academic and educational experience. He has contributed to the development of university curricula on human rights, designed specialized training packages, and implemented educational programs targeting universities, teachers, students, and civil society actors. He has also participated in the preparation of procedural and training manuals aimed at integrating human rights concepts into educational institutions and strengthening the capacities of academics and trainers in this field.

He has held several leadership and advisory positions, including President of the Change Academy for Democratic and Development Studies and Regional Manager of the Geneva Institute for Human Rights in the MENA region (2007–2012). He has served as an advisor on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism and as a member of official delegations to discuss human rights reports before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. He has also been involved in national initiatives addressing torture prevention and violence against women.

He has delivered hundreds of specialized training programs on international human rights protection mechanisms, good governance, criminal justice, and human rights-based approaches to prison management across numerous countries in the region. He is recognized as one of the leading experts in linking education with human rights and promoting a rights-based culture within governmental, academic, and civil society institutions.
